toph bcuz she is a master earthbender, katara didnt even know much waterbending he learned the rest at the north pole...plus toph created her own style of earthbendering...he needed atough teacher because air is earths opposite

She is relaxed and calm. She can also SEE if there is a problem such as if Aang is standing in the wrong position.
