The next morning Terry messaged him saying to meet at the rendezvous at one o'clock. Cal deleted the text in case Emily or Foster started to check his phone. He never imagined he would get involved in something like this, he didn't even know what the job was. He got up and went downstairs to find Emily had already gone to school. He picked up the phone and tried calling Foster.
'Hello.'
'Gill, it's me. Don't hang up.'
'What do you want?.'
'I just want to say i'm sorry about the other day. I've just got alot on my plate right now and i think a relationship would just tip it over the edge.'
'Then why did you kiss me?.'
'Because i wanted to.' She stayed silent for a moment.
'Your forgiven, just... Get yourself sorted out. We can't afford you to slip up.'
'Cross my heart. I'll see you later.'
'Bye.'
'Bye.' He put the phone back down and headed upstairs to change. At least that was one less thing on his mind.
He got into work earlier then usual, just so he had enough time to prepare himself. He stood outside and looked at the building, he could lose all this. Everything he worked so hard to achieve. He went in and looked round as he headed to his office, this could all vanish. He went into his office and found Foster waiting for him.
'Your early.'
'...I thought i'd make it up to you by doing some overdue paperwork.' He spotted the look that Gillan just gave him. Disbelieve. 'What was that?'
'What?.'
'The look you just gave me.'
'I never gave...'
'Bollocks. You think i'm lying. I've seen it on your face all week.'
'And I've seen it on yours.'
'I told you, Terry came to...'
'But it's more then just Terry isn't it?. There's something else.'
'No.'
'You may be the greatest deception expert but you suck at lying. When are you going to be honest with me? Just this once Cal, tell me what's going on.' He shook his head.
'I can't.'
'Fine. But just so you know, if something happens to you because of this, I won't be there to help you pick up the pieces.' She brushed past him and left. He shut his eyes and took a deep breathe, he was on his own.
He left about half twelve. As he drove to the meeting he couldn't help but think about what Gillan. If she find out, he's done for. When he arrived Terry was waiting out front for him.
'Cal.'
'Terry. What's going on then?.'
'Basically, the boss want us to stand outside the bank as lookouts in case the police turn up. There on their way over now so we better get a move on.' Terry got in the car. After ten minuets he noticed that Cal was pretty quite. 'You alright?.'
'I'm fine just....Nervous.'
'We'll be fine Cal.'
'That's what you said back in London and look what happened to you. I can't go prison Terr, i have a daughter.'
'I know, but nothing is going to go wrong this time. It's watertight.'
'You better hope it is.' After another five minuets, they pulled up outside the bank. Cal looked in the mirror and saw the other car parked just behind them. 'Aye Aye.' Terry got out the car as Cal watched him from the rear view mirror. He thought about driving off but they knew where he lived and what Emily looked like. Suddenly his phone rang.
'Hello?.'
'Hey dad.'
'Em? What's wrong?.'
'Nothing, i just got sent home.'
'What for?.'
'I felt really sick. The beans must have be dodgy.'
'Alright darling, just do me a favor and wait for me at my office.'
'Why?.'
'Cause i might have to spend the whole night there and i'm not leaving you on your own.'
'I can take care of myself you know?'
'I know just do this one thing for me Em and i'll see you later.'
'Ok dad. Love you.'
'Love you too.' He put his phone back in his pocket and prayed to god this would go off without a hitch. Terry came back and tapped on the window.
'It's time Cal.' He nodded and got out the car.
An hour later, he returned to his office and found Emily asleep on the couch. He didn't want to wake her so he got what he needed and went to the cube to finish off his paperwork. He tried not to think about what he had just done. He was so in thought he never heard Foster come in.
'You have got to stop that.'
'But it's just too funny.' The both laughed. 'How are you?.'
'I'm better. You?.'
'Good. Listen i'm sorry about what i said before, i didn't mean it'
'I know.' He smiled at her. 'I finished that paperwork you wanted.' He got up and handed it to her. He loved the look of amazement on her face.
'Thanks, i didn't think you would actually do it.'
'I said i would.' His eyes met hers, she could see he cared about her. She dropped the paperwork to the floor, looped her arms around his neck and pressed her lips against his. After a moment he started to kiss her back and rubber his hands up and down her arms. For a few second the kiss was soft and tender then something came over Cal and he turned more passionate, like all the feelings he had felt over the years had been put into this one kiss.
'Gill.' He said breathlessly. 'Your sure about this?.'
'More then anything.' She re-captured his lips.
At the crime scene, the detectives were still searching for evidence.
'Sir.'
'Wallowski.'
'I found something.' She held up a mobile phone.
'Any indication of whose it is?.'
'No but i'll look through it.' She knew exactly whose it was.
'Hello.'
