Maybe i some day , time ago was guilty of calling some of the princesses "bad role models" , i was wrong, i realized that the fact that i don't like a character or don't agree with, them doesn't mean they are bad role models.
To be fair,i find some people saying "Princess are a bad role model for girls because "insert princess name and reasons here" . But i don't see anyone saying a freaking thing about the disney male characters . I did an article in the Disney club
link
It was supossed to be a parody of how people critize female characters but never say a thing about males. Nobody actually got it.
Ariel quited to be a mermaid (her true self) and left her home to be with a man- She is dumb for leaving her family ,changing her body to a man , she teaches girls to be dependable of a boyfriend
Hercules quited to be a god (his true self) even if he allways wanted to be special , for a woman. And before that he gave up his force to save said girl, putting the rest of the city who needed him,in danger : Aww ,he´s so romantic and heroic
And i don't even like Ariel , yet i see who unfair is this . If a male character has flaws,he is a complex and human character,if a female has flaws ,she is a bad role for girls.
Now,i´ll explain why i think all the princess are good role models . i won't include Anna and Elsa, they are still not part of the franchise ,neither Moana (i haven't watched the movie)
Snow White: Snow is blinded by her inocence, true, but she is also in the worst situations and never breaks. Her sweet personality is allways there , Plus she is kind to all live beings. Fans ,specially the little ones, would learn some kindness and optimis with Snow White
Cinderella: i´ve already explained that there is nothing she could do with her situation (if she tried to defend herself she would be most likely kicked out of the house) Cinderella is a diferent optimist of Snow, She know the people sunrounding her sucks, but she never let them criying and had more inner strength than half of the world population. Eventually people will be found in situations they can't scape and are forced to deal with it,Cinderella would teach you how go on and still being capable to smile.
Aurora: She had the least screen amount of time, So is hard to say stuff about her. Aurora was given by the fairies the gift of beauty and a sining voice,But her charming personality was developed by herself. Aurora instead of complaining about her lack of friends, she finds company in the forest animals and enjoys talking to herself. She is also cheerful and nice to everyone. Not to mention that when she found out she was a princess and engaged to a prince (i mean, its like a lot of girls´s dream) , she was sad because she was in love with the peasant boy even if she previously talked about her dreaming with a prince. This implies she loves more the nice personality of a boy (even if she knew him just for one day) than a rich prince she doesn't know. Maybe some loners could relate to Aurora and have an active imagination.
The explanation for ther rest of the princess will be shorter because the classic princess are the most critized and who i think need be defended the most
Ariel: She is proactive and brave, dreamer and doesn't fear being seen as some weird girl for being diferent. People see Ariel as a model to reach dreams , no matter how far they seem to be
Belle: She teach how family is important, she is brave and apreciates the people´s personality instead of looks. She is also given a hobbie and reading its a really sane one. Belle would teach kindness ,something this world really needs.
Jasmine: like Ariel; Jasmine is proactive, like Aurora ; she values heart over status and royalty. She doesn't want to be seen as a price and demands her desitions to be take in count. Jasmine teach people to defend themselves and be asertive
Pocahontas: Not that there is something wrong with being saved (everybody needs help) but i have to point out that she is the only princess who was never in distress, Pocahontas has a full song about how important is caring about all nature beings (Colors in the wind would be a good song for emviromental publicity) She is also brave and selfless, she put herself in danger to save John Smith and left him go to be cured despite she wanted to be with him . There is no way she is a bad role model
Mulan: like Pocahontas, she gets the least critics for being selfless, brave and intelligent.
Tiana: Like Ariel she follws her dreams, but she is in a more realistic position and insist in working hard to reach them and towards the end of the movie , she gets her dreams done but without forgeting what is also important. She also showed be smart and proactive as a frog
Rapunzel: She has a lot of energy to spend the whole day in her tower and allways having something to do. Rapunzel is smart and very decided to reach her dream. Her selfness and bravery is better showed when she traded her liberty for Eugene´s life. She also learned to stand to mother Gothel, tired of her abused and controled life.
Merida: She actually doesn't turn into a role model until she begins to take responsability for her actions and finally acepted her fault and apologized to her mother,Her adventure teachs that is okay to be your own person, but also think about the consecuences and if something goes wrong, fix it yourself.
And i used the word "people" instead of "girls" because i think boys can relate to DP and take them as role models too
