There would probably be some article about the floating lights somewhere, she could see that it was about the missing princess, and it could help her figure out her situation. Also, she could do a little research on the outside world, which could help her when she left the tower.

It would help Ariel to research humans, but as well as that it might serve as a way for her to contact her family and let them know she's ok (assuming her father would use the internet), and she could have had a facebook profile and revealed her story to Eric that way.
