I don't think she would have left the sea if she wasn't given an opportunity to leave like she did.. I'm sure she may have visited the surface again in mermaid form.

Ariel may not be my favorite princess, but even I know she didn't just leave the sea for just Eric. I figure tons of people must blank out the first ten minutes of the film, where Ariel expresses great desire to explore the human world. =)

Eric was just one of the reasons. She also wanted to explore the land and live the human life. She was probably like Jasmine who got bored of the royalty life.

If he transformed into a merman, I don't know if she would have been ok with that.
