Some of the latest movies out of the Disney canon ARE UNFINISHED. They feel cobbled together--- a sprinkle of this, a pinch of that, and a spoonful of that. The elements are all there, but the cohesion and the attempt to create a real, functioning story is missing. There are only a few ( if any) complications for the protagonists to overcome, and there are almost no antagonists who aren't cardboard standees. The whole thing feels contrived. At least in the days of Renaissance Disney, each of the protagonists ( whether princess or simply hero) had A WHOLE LOT of HURDLES to surmount. The conflict they felt was not merely something inside of them, but also outside of them. In The Princess and The Frog, Brave, and now even in Frozen--- the character's main conflict is internal. They don't have a lot of external adversaries at all. And that makes the plot small, and the story feels short and unfinished. Rapunzel narrowly escaped this sort of treatment, because she had to top both an internal dilemma --- being lied to, and abused--- as well as the external--- standing up to both Eugene and Mother Gothel. Rapunzel earned her stripes. In their day, Pocahontas, Mulan, and Ariel ALSO HAD BOTH INTERNAL and EXTERNAL CONFLICTS. Merida has only the internal conflict that creates her problem. Tiana has an internal conflict that creates her problem, and a small bit of prejudice that is external. Anna and Elsa both have internal conflicts that cause all their problems, and not any external ones. ( Hans is so screwed up in his characterization that he is not even an effective villain).
If care is taken to create both the internal conflict and the external conflict for the character or characters, the plot is enhanced, and that makes for richer stories and a more satisfying, enduring movie.
