I will admit this though-it IS a bit somber, but we all have to be happy that John is going to be OK.

The Jungle Book and The Fox and the Hound are much sadder as far as I'm concerned.

The fox and the hound is sadder IMO. This one was very sad but more bittersweet.

It's one of the saddest, but I find The Fox and the Hound just that little bit sadder. I have a feeling that there's another one that I've forgotten about too.

I think it's the saddest ending to a DP movie but not Disney.

Her dear love leaves, and she doesn't know if she'll ever see him again and knows she probably won't [not counting the sequel, because she had no idea in the first movie lol] and he's wounded, and the soundtrack is beautiful at that scene. I wouldn't say saddest DISNEY movie ending, but maybe Disney princess, yes.

While Mulan's ending is not conventionally sad, I am not satisfied by it. Mulan was saved from death and dishonor only because she was the one who is the most responsible for victory, the Emperor didn't feel sorry for the poor unfortunate girl who wanted to save her father from death. And I'd never wanted to be honored by the person who has Chi-Fu as his right hand and is responsble for that terrible law. Yes, I don't share Chinese values and I am too devoted to Western Values to enjoy Mulan's ending.
