1) I see this happen the most.
2) As a fan of action characters myself, it's embarrassing when fellow fans do crap like that.
But yeah, both irritate me a lot.
and what Disneymagic said. it's not even a comparison to how more accepted the action heroines are, bar none. a few people on fanpop vs. the Internet and media for years and years. all heroines are expected to be this way and if they aren't (in the eyes of the audience or critics anyway- cuz I've noticed many action girls have passive moments but this will get ignored if they like her enough) they're bashed.
and the worst thing they do, victim blaming. "why doesn't she DO something? all she does is sit around waiting to be rescued! MY girl would kick butt and bust her way out of the problem!" I can't help but notice they don't say that about male characters either. only female characters are expected to rescue themselves even when it makes no sense for them to.
slowly people are starting to do it less but not on a grand scale.
But I dislike the opinion that action characters automatically more feminist and better than passive ones. I find Mulan pretty antifeminist( both character and movie). The scene when she hugs the Emperor( who is somewhat responsible for her sufferings) is just disgusting IMO. And I hate that Mulan's LI was a guy who mistreated her( I mean during the parade and the anti-human idea that people never have good reasons to lie doesn't justify him). I think that guy saving damsel is much less sexist than this IMO.
