But it takes "experience" to pick up on the body language when someone is "lying" to you. Ariel does not have much experience, and has only ever interacted with family and friends ( whom she trusts). So, this is her naivete, and a flaw, but it makes her a "real" character. Even in real life, some people do grow up "sheltered" and "inexperienced."
