I'm a sucker for mother-daughter relationships, especially since barely any exist in fiction that are at all substantial (moms usually only don't get killed off or out on the back burner so she can be at odds with her spirited rebel daughter- and Brave has this but Elinor and Merida have waaaay more depth and development than that). Also, Elinor wasn't abusive like Triton was during his rage, and the scenes with her and wee Merida are precious and realistic. And the end when Elinor "dies" and Merida says "I want you back, Mummy..." always makes me tear up. Besides, I never really got the impression that Triton and Ariel were particularly close, even if she does get the bulk of his attention, which she only really does because she gets into trouble the most. posted over a year ago.
