Weirdly back before the franchise was a huge thing every Belle fan I knew loathed Cinderella despite their similarities, I guess because they didn't like that she was the official leader. I think they've calmed down since then though now.

I rarely found anyone who are big fan of Belle really likes Ariel, or vice versa, so...

I guess it's because many people mistake Belle for mature realist. In my opinion Ariel and Belle are more similar than Belle and Tiana or Belle and Elsa.

Belle fans typically like Merida instead. Most Belle fans have things to say about Ariel that attempt to discredit her good traits.

Fans almost always put both of them against each other. At least i think that is the case here, in fanpop. It's like every time people need to compare the DPs, Belle would be some sort of the constant variable of the comparison, especially against Ariel. It's almost like people hate the fact that Belle is always more popular or more loved than Ariel or the other princesses. Sometimes they even blame Belle's fans too. When this happened, I always get the urge to say, 'leave Belle alone'.
