Facebook Question

Does anyone else have this problem?

There having some poll on Facebook where if you enter your name, phone number, etc. they will send you an iPad and if you take a survey you can keep the iPad.
Since all my friends had tried it I figured that I'd hop on the bandwagon and try it too.About ten minutes after that,a message appeared saying that after five days I had finally gotten my iPad,when it wasn't true. Then a message appeared saying that I had made a new adult account on Facebook and was looking for sex.
So I guess in short, all I want to know is if anyone else has this problem.

Thanks for you guy's help.

Yes, everyone has this problem, and it's called phishing and/or direct marketing. Marketing companies love to have users fill out surveys, because they can then add the users to their direct marketing lists, which are then sold to different web sites, advertisers, et cetera. This is all completely legal. Personal data is big business! You will, no doubt, start to get more spam e-mail, text messages and phone calls, trying to get you to buy something or even just click a link. If you provided your postal address, then you will also get more junk mail in your mailbox.

What's the difference between direct marketing (what I've just described) and phishing? Phishing is the collection of personal information for the purposes of breaking into your accounts, so that code crackers can write checks from your bank account, withdraw money from ATMs, apply for credit cards using your information, break into your online accounts (like Facebook or Fanpop), access files on your computer, apply for car and mortgage loans, etc. This is also big business, but it is illegal.

In general, any time you see an invitation to fill out a survey online, you should leave that page. Do NOT fill out surveys unless no personally identifying information is requested. For example, lots of web sites provide "free" video links (I run into this all the time trying to watch "Doctor Who" online) in exchange for filling out a survey. These sites aren't free, they're just getting the money indirectly from you, from selling the information you entered in the survey. DON'T DO IT.

Also, there are a lot of malicious hacks on Facebook, where posts will appear on your wall looking like your friends posted them. ALWAYS check directly with your friends before clicking on such links, especially if they are to surveys like you described. It is very common for scripts to masquerade as a particular user and post something to all that user's friends' walls in order to spread mischief and/or collect personal information. Check with your friends before clicking on such links: you'll often find that your friends actually had no idea that it was posted.
