Glee Question

Okay. I just started watching Glee in September of 2010. So, my question is...how did sweet Artie lose his walking ability?

I already knew he could walk because I saw him dancing in "Safety Dance", so don't tell me he never was able to walk . Was it an accident that happened or did some evil person hurt sweet innocent Artie?
