Chapter 17: The Girl with White Hair Part I
“Akane! Wake up or we’ll be late!” Two small hands shook Akane back to life and she saw Sakura kneeling on the bed, beside her. Akane saw that she was also close to tears. “Sakura – what’s wrong? What happened?” Akane looked at her worriedly. “Akane, get up, now! I’ve been trying to wake you up for the last five minutes ‘cause I want to go to this festival that’s happening today!” As Sakura was saying that, she was jumping up and down, making the bed shake underneath me. “Okay, Sakura. I’ll get up!” I pulled the sheets from my body and stood up from the bed. “Akane …” Laina shook her head.
“What?” Akane blinked at Laina while she pulled a plain white T-shirt over her head before she reached for her blue ripped jeans and placed it on. “You should’ve woken up a little earlier than five minutes,” Asuka finished Laina’s sentence.
“Well, I’m sorry Asuka and Laina but I didn’t know this would be a special day for Sakura.” “I wonder what kind of festival it is.” asked Laina and she grinned before snapping her fingers and her maroon PJs that she wore for bed vanished in golden sparkles, replaced by a one-shouldered aqua T-shirt, black jeans and ankle-length grey boots. “Going to wear this!” said Laina and smiled in satisfaction. Asuka waved her hands over her head and she was wearing her white mini-dress with her black low heels that she wore when Akane first saw her.
“Tadashe! I’m going somewhere with Sakura!” cried Akane as she ran down the stairs to the front door where Sakura was waiting. When Akane didn’t hear her brother’s reply, her eyebrows furrowed as she looked at Sakura. “Is Tadashe still sleeping?” Sakura nodded while opening the door to the fresh air outside. “It is a Saturday Akane,” she said.
“What are we going to do today Seiji?” Aruto asked. “I dunno.” Seiji exhaled. He and Aruto were lying down in some low-cut grass underneath a bridge by a lake. “I heard there’s a festival happening today. Wanna go see?” “Don’t care.” Seiji sighed, turning on his side as he closed his eyes. “Hey Seiji! Aruto groaned. Then he huffed, acting like a child and not like his usual wise self. “I guess I’ll go and see the festival if you don’t want to come!” Aruto told him. Then he smiled at Seiji’s back. “I’ll get you something Seiji, when I come back.” Aruto said gently. Seiji didn’t say anything as Aruto left him by himself.
“Wow!” Asuka cried, gasping at the sight of the festival. Everything was so spectacular with the decorations hanging on the signs of the shops on either sides of the road and, as Akane, Laina and Asuka could see, there were people who were dressed in festive clothing – like when Akane saw a man wearing a black-and-red-and-white cape that was designed in diamonds that went in a pattern and a black suite with a tall black white hat. The man was doing all sorts of tricks although, Akane saw that some of them were … strangely odd, such as him making a live dove become a dead one … what kind of trick is that going to do, entertain the people around him?
“Akane! I want to see that!” Sakura exclaimed, excitedly pointing at an area that was crowded by a small group of people. Some people who passed them also stopped to take a look. “Okay,” Akane was slightly curious of what was happening in the crowd. Was a ramen competition? No – doubt it. A small circus? Probably not. Was there a promotion going to happen today that Akane hadn’t seen days before? Don’t think so. As Akane pondered on what was going on amongst the crowd, she realized that there were musical tunes coming from inside the crowd. Sakura got a good spot near the front and Akane saw how her cheeks were blushing, her mouth was beaming a wide grin and her eyes were sparkling with joy. Akane squeezed through the crowd, getting to the spot where Sakura was.
As soon as I came to, I looked where everyone was staring. A slim-bodied and small figure was dancing almost flexibly and really beautifully in the small semi-circle that was made by the crowd. When the figure turned to Akane and her pixies, Akane saw how yellow her eyes were with the rest of her face hidden with a white handkerchief over her mouth and nose.
It was girl, for sure.
She was wearing an Indian-girl-type of clothing that was sparkled with bits of gold that hung on her top and Indian-type pants. She wore no shoes to Akane’s surprise, but what surprised her even more was how her hair looked. It was silkily white and waist-length – who would have white hair at such a young age like her? Akane didn’t get it.
The white-headed girl bowed to the crowd that gathered after her dance as the music came to a stop. “That seemed interesting,” Akane heard a couple say as she walked away to a nearby store to buy something for Sakura who mysteriously vanished somewhere. “Akane!” Asuka cried behind Akane. She turned to see her look worried. “What is it, Asuka?” “We think …” Laina’s lips quivered slightly, “… that we can feel a presence – of another pixie.” “Really? Where?” Akane swivelled, looking everywhere in the festival, alerted as she tried to look for a pixie.
“From the girl with white hair,” Asuka explained. Akane’s eyes blinked. She was stunned. That girl that danced a few minutes ago? She holds a bonded pixie? “Did you see her go anywhere?” Akane asked. “We should worry about Sakura first, Akane.” Laina said, concerned. “Then we’ll talk about The Girl with White Hair.” “Is that who you’re calling her?” Akane laughed as she went to Sakura who was by a group of kids who were watching a small puppet show that was probably made for kids.
While Akane, Asuka, Laina and Sakura were having their fun, Aruto was also having fun by staring at all the ornaments and jewellery that were laid out on tables by a restaurant, next to where The Girl with White Hair danced before. “I wonder what that is called.” Aruto mumbled to himself as he transfixed his gaze upon an ancient-looking bowl that had a painted design of two dragons – one blue and the other white – coiled together with their heads bent with each other. Aruto believed that every wise thing, such as the bowl that looked plain and old, had a name of its own. Several muffled voices nearby caught his attention. He then began hovering over to a blue-and-pink tent that stood next to the jewellery stall. ‘Who on earth is making that racket?’ Aruto wondered.
“Aruto,” Aruto turned and saw Seiji staring at him with his eyebrows arched. “Seiji!” Aruto cried, sweat formed his forehead. He didn’t know Seiji was tailing him and that he was right next to him, but he tried not to show it. “What are you doing?” He sounded bored for some reason. “Who’s there?” A melodious voice came from the entrance of the tent.
Seiji looked up, his eyes tired, just as Aruto did.
“Let’s go Akane!” Sakura cried, gripping onto Akane’s wrist and then dragging her to an ice-cream van. “I want some ice-cream please!” Sakura begged. Akane smiled and nodded. “Okay,” As Akane and Sakura were nearing the ice-cream van, someone unexpectantly bumped into us. “Oh! Sorry!” Akane laughed nervously. “It’s okay.” Then she saw that it was Emi and her boyfriend Jin. “Emi!” squealed Akane. “Akane! You’re here for the festival? And Sakura!” Emi beamed at both Akane and Sakura. “Yeah, it’s been so much fun! We saw a girl dancing in a crowd and a puppet show! Right now, Akane is going to go and take me to the ice-cream van!” Sakura grinned happily. “Can we tag along?” Emi asked. “Sure!” Sakura nodded. “Jin?” Emi glanced up at her boyfriend.
Jin blinked at Emi and nodded, giving a slight smile at Akane before leaving. “Where’s he off to?” Sakura pouted sulkily. “I was just thinking that he could tag along too, since he’s your boyfriend.” “Don’t worry Sakura. Jin’s just going to do something he was supposed to do before we saw you.” Emi explained. Sakura nodded and breathed a sigh of relief.
After Akane bought Sakura her ice-cream – Emi had one too because Sakura begged her to because Akane said she didn’t feel like it – the three of them settled down on a bench next to a shady tree. “Mmm!” Sakura licked the ice-cream from the sides of her mouth. “Yum! Do you like yours, Emi?” She nodded as she swallowed hers. Then Emi noticed how distracted Akane was and startled her when she asked if she was okay. “Y-yeah! I’m fine. Just thinking,” Akane said nervously. “Akane, I think it’s a good chance for us and see The Girl with White Hair.” Laina whispered. Akane nodded slightly and twisted to Sakura and Emi. “Guys, I have to go somewhere but I’ll be back. I promise I won’t be long but if I am, Emi.” Akane glanced at Emi. “Will you look after Sakura until I come home?”
“I’ll be fine by myself, Akane!” said Sakura, her voice was positively fearless. “No Sakura,” Akane put a hand on her shoulder. “Unless you’re old enough, you can be by yourself. Also,” Akane lowered her voice. “Ivory will be there with you.” Sakura beamed and nodded. “Okay Akane. You can go,” Akane kissed Sakura on her forehead and waved to Emi and left to where The Girl with White Hair was.
“S-Seiji?” The girl with white long hair blinked at Seiji. “Maki.” Seiji smiled slightly. Small arms clasped around Seiji’s neck and the white-headed girl’s voice – Maki’s voice – squealed blissfully. “Seiji! I can’t believe it’s really you!” “Seiji?” Seiji turned and saw Akane standing not so far away from where he and Maki were. “Akane,” Seiji pursed his lips with a hard look on his face. Maki swivelled to Akane and she narrowed her yellow eyes, staring at Akane suspiciously. “Who the hell are you?” Maki’s voice was bitter and callously cold. “I was about to ask the same thing. Do you have a pixie?” Asuka and Laina emerged from behind Akane.
Maki huffed. “One of my pixies and I don’t get along since she’s too nice and scared of my character. I hate her, anyway. Why?” Akane gaped, shocked of what she is hearing. This girl hates her own pixie? What if she was disappearing already? “You can’t hate her! She’s going to–” “–disappear. I know,” Maki rolled her eyes. “Akane, leave.” Seiji interrupted Akane to speak. She turned to him, her eyes congealed with horror. Maki arched an eyebrow with a smirk on her lips. “Yeah Akane.” said Maki slyly, “If that’s your name. Go,”
“No.” Akane said firmly. “What did you just say?” Maki sneered. “I’m not leaving.” Akane said again. “Excuse me Akane, but Seiji is here and I–” “What’s so important about this girl, Seiji?” Akane asked to Seiji. “How come you never told me about her?” Seiji looked away. “If Seiji didn’t want to tell you about me then he shouldn’t!” Maki cried. Her voice was crazy with madness! Just when Akane was about to say to Maki that she wasn’t asking her, a small pixie showed herself to everyone.
The pixie had short black hair and pale cherry-red eyes that glowed slightly. She was wearing a black dress that looked like the ones that women wore in the olden days and she wore knee-length boots on her feet.
“Mai,” Maki glanced sideways at the pixie. Akane gulped slowly …
