Chapter 21: A New Voice
“Did you ever think of the possibility that Seiji would fall for you, Akane?” asked Shizuko the next day. It was an early frost-bitten morning that chilled Akane’s skin til there were goosebumps on her forearms. She and Shizuko were making their way up the stairs to the school’s roof just out of boredom. Shizuko told Akane that people come up there to chill or relax during their free-period or time. “I didn’t think much about it, to be honest.” Akane stared at her feet, shame-faced. “If I were you Akane,” Shizuko pushed the heavy metal door at the rusty doorknob that led outside on the roof. As Shizuko opened it, light emitted through the first opening, until she widened it that the sun’s light clouted Akane’s face, almost blinding her due to the almost-dark room that she was in a minute ago. “And I was in the same situation,” Shizuko stepped outside after Akane did.
She closed the door behind her. “I’d like to have time to myself to think about what’s happened in the past and what would occur if I did this or did that.” Shizuko said severely. “I know,” Akane crossed her legs on the cracked, solid concrete and then smiled at the breathtaking view of the city that was small from miles away in the isolated parts of the country. “This is one of the hardest, problematical situations I’ve ever been through!” Akane flung her arms in the air in frustration. “I’m sure it is,” Shizuko sat next to her. “Akane, things can’t be changed in the past but you can always change what you want to do next.” Akane nodded, light-headed.
Then complete silence skulked in the air. It was nice–the quiet. Nothing but the wind that wafted through the girls’ hair whirred between them. During the silence, Akane was lost in a trace of her thoughts in her mind. ‘Why didn’t I see it before?’ was one of them. Akane was just as naïve as the other girls her age. “Unbelievable,” Akane muttered under her breath. “Did you give any thought of the one-week school camp yet?” Shizuko asked, almost eagerly. From her voice, Akane could tell right away that she was going to it. To Shizuko’s slight disappointment and Akane’s depressions, Akane shook her head. “I didn’t have the time, sorry.” Akane apologized, binding her legs with her arms. Shizuko got over her disappointment a little too hastily to Akane’s utter surprise. “But you’ll come right?” Akane shrugged. “I’ll ask … my Dad.” Akane was tentative for a split second. Shizuko beamed. “Sounds good,”
As the school increased with students around school campus and inside the building as time passed, Akane decided that she would go inside to go to her first class early. “Akane, wait up!” Akane turned sideways behind her and not too far away, down the white locker hall, Seiji was quickening his pace as he walked to where Akane stood. “What is it Seiji?” she asked him when he neared her. “Do you have a minute?” Seiji asked breathlessly. “Why?” “Just come with me. It won’t take long. Promise,” Seiji looked at Akane with deep-set violet eyes. Akane shook her head, but she tilted her head to the Social Science class door. “We can talk in Social Science,” Akane headed to the classroom, not waiting for Seiji’s reply.
As soon as they both took their seat in two chairs behind some desks, Seiji sucked in a deep breath before beginning his talk. “I just want to know … if you’re okay. With what’s been going on,” he added the last bit. Akane folded her hands that were on her lap. “I’m not okay with it and I’m sure you’ve guessed already.” Seiji nodded, ashamed. “But for now Seiji, I’m going to try and take it easy. Step by step,” Akane told him slowly, thinking in her mind what words would describe what she’s feeling. “I understand.” Seiji smiled stiffly. “I kind of wanted to see you Akane, and hear your voice, that’s all.” Akane chuckled. “Well, here I am.” She raised her arms, pointing to herself. “Alive and well.”
Seiji smiled and raised a hand, brushing Akane’s strands away from her eyes. Akane blushed bright cimson. Asuka and Laina glanced at each other when a voice startled them from behind. “Hello,” They both turned and noticed Kaito’s troll hovering behind them. “I’m Rensha.” “What are you doing here? Is Kaito around?” Laina looked about her. She couldn’t see Kaito ambling aimlessly in the hall or outside.
Rensha shook his head. “My friend isn’t here today.” He told the pixies. “Tell us why you’re here, Rensha.” Asuka raised an eyebrow. “Can I have a word with you?” “Right at this minute?” asked Laina. Rensha nodded. “But in private,” he added. Laina narrowed her eyes, gazing at Rensha suspiciously. “I don’t trust him, Asuka.” She turned to her. Asuka nodded. “Neither do I, Laina. But he wants to talk so we’ll give him some time.” Asuka dropped her voice down to a whisper, turning ever so slightly to see if Akane heard anything.
She didn’t. Akane seemed to busy with Seiji to even take a glimpse at what they were doing.
“Okay,” Laina said. Rensha led the two girls swiftly through the hall and opened the door to the outside world. “What is it that you want to talk about, Rensha?” Laina crossed her arms over her chest. “Laina, we have to be rational about what Rensha’s about to tell us.” Asuka said firmly. Laina shook her head, blowing out an exasperated sigh. “I don’t want to be out here too long Asuka. This troll is wearing my patience out real thin, you know?” “I understand,” Rensha cut in quietly. “I came here to ask you both if you could consider asking Akane if she could see Kaito after school today.”
“Did Kaito ask you to tell us this?” Laina asked. Laina was practically taking this whole conversation critically, from Asuka’s point of view. Rensha nodded. “Precisely,” he answered. “We’ll talk about it with Akane, Rensha.” It was Asuka’s turn to step in. Laina held her tongue, trying not to say anything inconvenient. “Thank you,” was all Rensha said before he went away, back to Kaito. “Are we seriously gonna tell Akane about this Asuka?” Laina’s lips trembled as she and Asuka turned back to go inside.
Asuka nodded. “I’m sure it’s about Rensha, Laina. Kaito never spoke a word of him to Akane and I’m positive that she wants to know why.” Laina sighed. “I know Asuka.” Laina averted her eyes from her friend. “What do you think of him, though? Rensha, I mean?” Laina fleeted a look at Asuka. She was pressing her lips, slightly blushing as she looked down. Her dark purple-and-black-streaked hair cascaded her face instantly before Laina could see her mortified expression. “Ohmigod,” she gasped. “You’re into this guy, aren’t you Asuka? And yet, we’ve only met him!”
“It’s nothing like that Laina!” Asuka waved her hands around just as they both entered the classroom again. The bell must’ve rang because there were lots of students in the classroom now. Akane was sitting in her seat by the class window in the third row of the classroom. “Oh, it’s most definitely is Asuka,” Laina cried, clutching her stomach as she was about to go into unstoppable fits of laughter. “What are you two talking about?” Akane asked softly. “Asuka’s in love with Rensha!” Laina gasped, holding her breath. “What? Kaito’s bonded troll?” Akane blinked, astonished. Asuka was flustered deep scarlet from her neck to every aspect of her face. It was certainly something to laugh about.
“He sounds like a master of Taekwondo or something – so masterly that I could choke!” Laina clasped her fingers round her neck and widened her eyes, pretending to choke. “What about you then, huh?” Akane retorted, still humiliated. “You have a thing for that wise troll Aruto, don’t you Laina? Admit it!” Laina gaped, her face as white as a ghost, the color from her cheeks washed completely. Then she became as bashful as Asuka was. “I do not have a thing for Aruto, Asuka! He’s way out of my league!” “You’re such a liar Laina! My love radar can sense that you have feelings for Aruto!” Laina huffed, turning on her heel. “God, you’re such a goody-goodie Asuka!”
“You’re the one to talk! You’re the one who talks far too much for both me and Akane!” Asuka spat. The pep talk that Asuka and Laina were having was turning into a wild argument. “Girls, don’t fight.” Akane tried to keep her voice down as Mr. Varner, the S. Science teacher came through the door. But the two pixies were barely listening to her.
“I’m never speaking to you again Laina!” Asuka said sharply and fluttered out of the classroom. “Same here!” Laina said infuriated before she too dashed out of the classroom, abandoning a weak-willed Akane who was watching after her bonded pixies. Mr. Varner’s warm welcome to the class broke Akane’s stare from the door. ‘I’d better console them during lunch period.’ She thought sadly.
“What’s wrong with those two?” Shizuko whispered in the crowded line at the cafeteria. Akane bit her bottom lip as she took a peek at the pixies. They were both still aggravated with each other. “They were fighting before first class began.” Akane mumbled. She reached an arm to grab some grapes to put on her tray. “Hey, you two,” Shizuko whispered to Laina and Asuka. They both looked at her, waiting but not giving each other eye contact. “Why don’t you two make up for what you did, huh? Akane’s has a lot of problems going on in her life already and she doesn’t want you both to squabble at each other.”
“It’s all Asuka’s fault! She’s the one who said that I had a crush on Aruto when I don’t at all! Who would have feelings for such a tyrant?” Laina gritted with clenched fists. “Is not! You’re the one who started the subject in the first place!” Asuka bit back harshly. Laina was a loss for words. “W-well … that may be true,” Laina muttered and Asuka waited, listening out for an apology from her. Instead, she was slightly mystified by her next words.
“But you need to apologize for what you said about my liking for Aruto!” Laina cried, pointing her index finger at her. “I have nothing to apologize for Laina!” Shizuko couldn’t hear herself stop the argument so she merely gave up. “They’re going at each other non-stop like crazy,” Shizuko told Akane as she and her walked out of the line and searched for a table to sit in. “Darn it,” Akane muttered under her breath. “I’ll have to deal with them when we get home.” “Tell me how to goes tomorrow, okay?” Shizuko asked. “Sure thing,”
By the time the after school bell rang, Akane was trapped in utter silence between Asuka and Laina as she went home by the school bus. “Alright girls,” Akane threw her bag on her bed and sat herself down after with her legs crossed. “You need to reconcile each other right now. I have enough problems on my hands as it is already, like Shizuko said. I don’t want you both to fight.” Akane tried to say this as soothing as possible.
“This girl has ‘swagger’ written all over her, Akane.” Asuka shook her head. “Aren’t you such a goody-goodie Asuka!” Laina hissed. “I’m not the one who looks all high and royal in baby pink clothes and dazzling styles!” “I like my fashion!” Asuka said. Amongst the bickering of the two pixies, Akane was covering her ears, trying to block out their voices. “Enough!” Akane shouted. The girls stopped instantly, both turning to Akane’s tautened expression. “That’s it! I’m not gonna talk to you girls anymore because of this stupid chaos!” Akane stood up as she said this and stomped out of her room, carrying her bag with her, down the stairs to the kitchen.
Silence wavered between Asuka and Laina after Akane’s arrogant disappearance. “Idiot!” Laina spat. “Who’re you calling an idiot, Swagger Girl?” Asuka narrowed her eyes. “You heard Akane, Royal Pain!” Laina gritted. “Oh and what about you, huh? Go on, apologize to me Swagger Girl so I can give you back mine.” Asuka gestured her to start first. “As if!” Laina was agitated with fury. “You’re the one who started this fuss Laina! You apologize first!” Just as Laina was about to hurl at Asuka with her pixie powers, a voice that sounded similar to Akane’s, filled the room, causing Laina to choke slightly on her words.
“Stop fighting,”
Those two words froze Asuka and Laina to stiff and they both gulped. “Wh-who was that Asuka?” Laina’s lips quivered. “Don’t be afraid,” The voice sounded very close… Asuka gave a shrill scream and Laina flashed a panicky glare at her but Asuka had her eyes on something behind her. Laina hesitated as her eyes travelled down next to her. A ripped end of clothing rippled in midair and as soon as Laina faced whatever it was behind her, she gaped, dumbfounded…
A knock on the door startled Akane as she was lost in her thoughts. “Coming!” she cried, running to the door. What she saw on her front doorstep, was Kaito. “Oh. Hi Kaito,” Akane sighed. “What are you doing here?” Kaito raised an eyebrow as Akane said this. “Your pixies … didn’t tell you I was coming?” he asked. Akane shook her head no. “No. But did you want to talk about something?” Kaito nodded. “Yeah, and it’s kind of important.” Akane nodded. “Okay. Come in. Sakura’s not home at the moment. She’s at a friend’s house so she won’t be back for a while.” Akane shut the door as she said this after Kaito took off his shoes and entered inside.
Kaito quietly went into the living room and settled into the couch, waiting for Akane to come and sit with him. “Akane,” Kaito whispered when Akane was next to him. She looked at him before he reached out a hand to touch hers on her knees. “I’m so sorry for not telling you about Rensha.” Akane smiled. “That’s okay Kaito. You know, at first, I was really curious as to how you could see Asuka and Laina at first.” Akane told him. Kaito smiled. “Is that all you wanted to say?” Akane asked. He nodded. “Pretty much,” Kaito shrugged.
“I thought if you didn’t know – and it was such a long time since you didn’t – well, I thought you were furious with me for not telling you. From now on, I’m not going to keep any secrets from you – cheating or not.” Akane pecked his cheek with her free hand and chuckled under her breath. “You don’t have to say that Kaito. I know you love me with all your heart.” “I do.” Kaito said almost immediately. “I’ll tell you everyday Akane, until you accept it.” Akane bit her lip, trying not to grin. “Alright,” Kaito stood up. “I have to go. Anna wants me home soon.” “When will I go to your place?” Akane asked, leading him back to the door. “Whenever you feel like it, Akane. You know it’s just me and my big sis right?”
Akane shrugged. “Thought there’d be another family member living at your house that I missed.” Kaito shook his head. “No, of course not.” He leaned down and pecked her lightly on her lips. “See you tomorrow.” “If I see you,” Akane muttered inaudibly, mostly to herself. She stared at Kaito’s back as he slouched off with his hands shoved deeply in his pockets down the footpath. “Akane!” Two voices from upstairs screamed from Akane’s room when the door clicked shut. Akane rushed upstairs, staggering a few steps on the way, and flung the door open noisily. “What?! Did you two finally make up yet?” Akane cried.
“N-No, not really,” Asuka was shaking uncontrollably. “Who is this, Akane?” Laina didn’t shake as relentlessly as Asuka but she was slightly shaking from her hands as she turned her head next to her. Akane followed her eyes and blinked, somewhat dazed at what she was seeing. Hovering between Asuka and Laina, was another pixie who had the most cobalt eyes Akane had ever seen and hair a wavy shade of red. She was wearing a white knee-length, ragged dress that was tattered at the bottom and had a bow tie that was at the waist, but she wore no shoes to Akane’s astonishment.
Despite of how she was dressed, she looked like a young girl who was full of hope and love. “Hi,” her voice was just like Akane’s that Akane was shocked to hear such a sound. “I’m Lilith, but you can call me Lilly. I’m your future-bonded pixe, Akane.” The pixie bowed a little bow.
