This review is dedicated to Bill Hanna, Joe Barbera, and Gene Wilder.
Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a 2017 animated film. The film's plot is based on the classic 1971 Willy Wonka film, but the film also has the title characters of the Tom and Jerry franchise.
The Plot
Charlie Bucket is a broke kid who wants to get a golden ticket so he can go to Willy Wonka's place. Tom and Jerry try to help Charlie get a golden ticket. Eventually Charlie gets a golden ticket and visits Willy Wonka's place along with his grandfather and the other ticket winners. However Tom and Jerry are worried about Mr. Slugworth's sneaky plans. Willy Wonka shows the kids his eccentric place while Tom, Jerry, and Tuffy try to Mr. Slugworth.
A Willy Wonka animated film that stars Tom and Jerry is a very weird idea, but that's what I like about it. Lots of films are mocked for being too generic. A Willy Wonka/Tom and Jerry crossover film is thankfully not generic. The film has plenty of sweet and fun scenes. Tom and Jerry's rivalry with the film's main antagonist is a good addition that adds lots of interesting and entertaining scenes to the film.
The Characters
Charlie is still the protagonist even though he's not any of the 3 title characters. He is a likeable and sympathetic kid. I've never been a big Jerry fan, but Tom's cool and funny. This version of Willy Wonka is very similar to Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka. Mr. Slugworth is a great antagonist. His cartoonish antics are lots of fun. However this is the first animated version of him which is pretty entertaining. The other kids are pretty funny, especially the gum obsessed Violet. Droopy's cameos are good.
The Animation
The film is very colorful and nice to look at it. The characters look cool and unique. The film's animation is good, especially by non-theaterical standards. During Mr. Slugworth's song the animation keeps changing designs. It looks really good.
The Songs
The film has the same songs as the 1971 live action film. They are charming and well done songs. My favorite song is Mr. Slugworth's song. It's so memorable and catchy. It's 1 of my favorite songs.
Overall
The film is delightfully cute, eccentric, and fun. The film got negative reviews, but I think it deserves more fans.
