In the darkness of the night, when everyone is asleep and the streets are ridden of life, is the time when danger comes alive.
Walking through the dark, empty alleys, soon to reach the spot where he was to meet the rest of his gang. He stopped where he was to rendezvous and waited.
Sensing someone close by, his crimson, brown-tinted eyes darted back and fourth, only to catch a glimpse of a flash of silver in the moonlight.
What was that?
A cold, sharp metal pressed into his throat, and an icy voice greeted him, "I was waiting a long time for this..." Chilled to the bone, he recognized who the voice belonged to, the girlfriend of the leader of his rival gang.
"What do you want, Amy?" he asked as he felt her grip harden.
"You think that you can go around wandering on our gang's territory without Scourge's permission?" she growled.
"This isn't your territory! This territory is shared by all the gangs!"
"Is that so? Well... Scourge seems to have a different opinion. He has officially claimed this as our gang's territory and there is nothing that the other gangs can do about it! Do you want to test us, Shadow?"
Amy, the once kind girl had become hardened in the rays of Sonic's dislike for her. She had always loved him but he never loved her back, so she decided to move on, therefore joining Shadow's rival gang and becoming Scourge's girlfriend.
"Well then... kill me now, what are you waiting for?" Shadow asked so coolly that even he was surprised, but he took advantage of Amy's surprise by shoving his elbows into her stomach and narrowly escaping the cut that was about to be made to his throat.
Shadow wasn't ready to give up this alley just yet as he glared at Amy, throwing the challenge head on.
"Ugh! Bring it on, bastard!" Amy screeched and came at Shadow with the knife raised. He dodged it as it swung straight at his neck.
"Not gonna happen bitch!" he came up and tried to plough his fist into her face, but he missed and she flipped behind him.
"ARGH!" he cried as he felt the searing pain of the knife sinking into his back, right between his shoulder blade and his spine. He quickly reached over his back and pulled it out. He looked at it and saw scarlet glistening. Covering it. He bared his sharp teeth at Amy and held onto the knife tightly.
"Did you really think that you would get away with that?"
"No. But it's not like your gang's gonna get this territory."
"Oh really?" Shadow scoffed and aimed the knife right at Amy's neck, "And are you going to stop me?"
"Yes." she stared at Shadow defiantly, but behind the defiance, fear was being hidden.
He smiled as he was about to make the final movement that would end the pink hedgehog's life, but he was stopped by a deep pain in his left side.
He dropped the knife in shock and looked down to see the scarlet blood glistening once again. "Don't you ever touch my girlfriend." Came a dark, menacing voice behind him.
Shadow slowly raised his arms in a surrender's stance as he felt the cold tip of a pistol hit his temple. Hoping that raising his hands had shocked his enemy, he quickly flung both of his elbows back as he had done when Amy attacked him, knocking his attacker to the ground, quickly turning around to grab the gun from his hand.
"Well, well... Scourge. I hear that you have plans to make this your alley?"
"Yes I do. You will not stop me, Shadow!" Scourge flung his foot out and tripped Shadow, causing him to fall flat on his back, hitting the cold, rough ground and feeling a blazing pain in his arm.
He cringed and looked over to see the knife trapping him, pinning him to the ground. He looked up to see Scourge standing over him, with Amy holding his arm.
Scourge was, once again, holding the gun and grinning. Shadow heard the trigger click.
"Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog." Scourge cackled evilly as he pointed the gun at his chest.
Shadow realized with heavy dismay that his life would end now. If only... BANG! Shadow squeezed his eyes shut as he heard the gun go off, but he didn't feel anything.
He heard the clash of knives and a shallow scream that came from Amy. Footsteps pattered away on the scratchy gravel and a familiar female voice rang through the air, "What business do you have here, Scourge!?"
"This is my territory."
"And this is not the right time to pick a fight over gang territory. If you want this alley, you're going to have to choose a more convenient time for the fight and trust me, our gang is always ready for a challenge."
"Okay, but don't expect us to give up that easily."
"I wont." came the flirtatious reply, and then he heard the stones crunching under Scourge's feet as he retreated.
He opened his eyes to see the high, shiny, black leather boots that covered the feet of a striking, enticing, cerulean-eyed, chalky-white-furred bat.
She bent down to gently draw the knife out of Shadow's arm, un-pinning him from the ground. He shot her a grateful look, "Thank you Rouge."
Meeting her captivating stare, she replied with "Oh, honey, don't thank me... I was only here for duty to my gang. If a meeting wasn't called, you could've counted yourself dead."
Rouge slightly stuck her large chest out and eyed Shadow mischievously.
He closed his eyes, turned his head and stuck his hand out as if to refuse her coy tactics, "Not now Rouge... Mephiles and Espio are still supposed to meet us here."
"Later big boy?" she winked her eye, revealing her glittering silver eye-shadow.
Shadow smiled and muttered to himself as he shook his head in good spirited disbelief.
Rouge grinned naughtily and walked up behind Shadow, walking her pointer finger and her middle finger down the large, white tuft of fur on his chest.
Shadow kindly placed his hand over hers and looked her straight in her intense eyes, "Rouge. I said later, okay?" He said steadily.
She looked at him intimately, "Okay, handsome." she chuckled and nodded.
Shadow suddenly looked up at the rusty, green, old dumpster. Emerging from behind it came Espio and Mephiles.
"Espio, Mephiles... a bit late, aren't we?"
"Sorry Shadow."
"Sorry wont cut it, what I want is for you to be on time."
"Yes Shadow... Your side!" Espio cried out in sheer alarm, "What happened?"
"I was attacked by Amy and Scourge. And now that that has happened, a new issue has arisen that is more important than the last one that we were going to discuss. But first of all, I want to know who arranged this whole meeting... here." Shadow gazed menacingly at the three members of his gang.
Mephiles nervously took a step forward, "I did."
"Hmm." Shadow looked at him with sheer disgust, "Well, I am glad to let you know that your arranging of this meeting has resulted in my injury, which brings me to the issue. You see Scourge has decided that he will claim this alley as his own territory. It's not his to claim. This alley is one of the few shared territories." Shadow affirmed strongly.
"Well, Shadow, the only thing that we can do is fight for it. But is it worth it, for this little piece of territory? You need to balance out the consequences. Injury for sure will occur, possibly serious injury and maybe even death." Espio frowned.
"You have a point Espio, but you must keep in mind. If we let this alley go without a fight, we are showing weakness and you all know my feelings towards weakness." Shadow spat the word as if it was poisonous dirt.
"When will the fight commence?" Mephiles inquired curiously.
"Possibly tomorrow... so be ready. You are dismissed. Espio, I need you for a moment."
"Yes?" Shadow pulled the purple chameleon away from the rest of his gang, "Keep an eye on Mephiles, will you? After that incident... I just don't seem to carry the same trust for him that I used to."
"I will. You can count on me Shadow."
"Thank you, I may decide to see you here at about the same time tomorrow night. Make sure that Mephiles is watched at all times... he can no longer be trusted." Shadow nonchalantly dismissed Espio and started his trek home when,
"Wait!" he turned around to see Rouge running towards him.
"Not today, okay?"
"No Shadow, it's not about that. It's about your injuries." she said firmly.
"I'll be fine…"
"Shadow, come to my place and I will make sure that you don't get an infection."
"Fine…" Shadow muttered as he followed Rouge to the edge boundaries of the nearly abandoned ghettos.
She led him into her house which smelled like fresh spices all the time.
"Sit." she commanded him and pointed to her bed. He sat and she walked away to go get some antiseptics and bandages.
Shadow gazed around her small room. It was a dusky mauve in colour and there were many pictures plastered all over her walls, some of which were taken by a camera and some of which she had drawn herself.
He walked up to one picture in particular, it made his heart thud inside his chest.
In the picture he was sitting in a lounger on the beach with a pair of aviator glasses on. Sitting beside him was Rouge and leaning over his shoulders was his best friend Maria.
He barely ever got to see Maria anymore, now that he was living the gang life. Shadow reached out and touched her face then bowed his head and went to sit back down on Rouge's bed.
He looked up to see Rouge enter the room with a bottle of cleansing alcohol, some cloths, gauze and bandages in her hands.
She set them all down on her night table and took one of the cloths, poured alcohol over it and began to dab at the gun wound on Shadow's side.
He winced at the sting, but knew better than to lash out on Rouge, who was trying to help him.
She talked to him as she cleaned and bandaged his sores.
When she finished, she stood back and smiled, "There, all better." she left to put all of the stuff away and Shadow went to look into the small mirror on her dresser.
He twisted his mouth but didn't say anything. He only wanted to rest.
"You need some rest." Rouge peeked around the doorway.
"I-I have to go... thank you very much."
"No, you can rest here." Rouge smiled and pulled back the covers on her bed for Shadow.
He shot her a grateful look and sunk comfortably into the warm silk sheets which were a pale pink in colour, only black Playboy bunny icons scattered it.
Rouge pulled the blanket up to Shadow's neck, "Sleep tight, handsome."
She winked and left the room. "I will, sexy." Shadow replied smartly, too quiet for the white bat to hear, or was it too quiet?
"Don't think I didn't hear that, love." she called from the room and Shadow chortled softly to himself before allowing the wave of sleep to overtake him.
