Restless… not able to properly sleep… all day! This was crazy! At the break of dusk was when he would be able to set off on his journey. First he needed to do a favour for Shadow and that was his primary obligation of the night. After that, he would be able to continue working with the rest of his gang on plots for dealing the proper drugs to the druggies and making as much money off them as possible. Smiling gleefully to himself as he raised himself and strode in the direction of Snipe; the place where guns were sold at low prices. Since he knew the shop owner, he would have no problem there. For you see, in the gang life, if you are allies with owners of gun shops, then you are in good business and will survive the vicious circle of the harsh, cruel and demanding times.
“Long time no see, Rachelle and Maria.” He opened the door and walked straight into Snipe. He smiled at the bad-ass chick, Rachelle, who stood behind the counter, hair flowing long and red like his. Except she was human… not echidna. Rachelle blew a bubble from the wad of gum that she was chewing and turned around, smiling when she set her gorgeous, gold-flecked, grey eyes on him. “Knuxie!” Knuckles instantly ran up to her and gave her a long, friendly hug, “well, you obviously haven’t come by here just to say hi to me.”
“No, you’re right. I haven’t… I was sent here by a friend and was told to get him an M-16... Got any of those?” Knuckles looked around casually, sneaking a glance at her beautifully freckled face as she marched into the stock-room. Her hips, which were tightly fitted with a leather mini-skirt swung gracefully from side-to-side as her high heeled boots clicked on the concrete floor. Within a few minutes, Rachelle emerged from the room, with the small, golden-blonde hedgehog, Maria, who worked with her; at her side, holding a large box, “don’t let it out of your sight and give it to Shadow right away. M-16s can do a lot of damage in the hands of the enemy.” she hissed secretively. Knuckles looked at her, flabbergasted, “H-how did you know?”
“How did I know what? That Shadzy is the guy who needs the gun? Easy… he always needs a new gun, but never usually gets you to run his errands. I wonder why this time?” she looked thoughtful for a moment. “You know Shadow?”
“Shadzy’s a good friend of mine, and obviously Maria here cant help but talk about him occasionally. Trust me… I bet you every gun-shop owner in the city knows him…” she let out a sly, friendly snicker. And Knuckles joined in the laughter, realizing that no pun was really intended. “Anyways, it was nice seeing you again, you should come by more often… even if it’s not to buy guns…”
“Yeah.” Knuckles sighed and handed her the money, “thanks again Rachelle.”
“My pleasure.” Rachelle winked and Maria touched Knuckles’ arm, “Knuckles, please tall Shadow that I said hi…” she gazed at him with begging, ice eyes. “I will, I promise you Maria.” Knuckles slowly walked out and started for Shadow’s place. “Knuckles!” he whipped around to see Sonic and Silver running towards him. “What is it? I have to deliver this to Shadow…”
“Well we’re coming with you.” Silver started off slowly. “Why?”
“Why do you think? Maybe it’s because that green shit-head that sounds like a dying, constipated old lady is up to no good?”
“Who? Jet?” Knuckles asked, not too surprised that the green hawk was up to no good once again. “I cant let you go alone.” Silver said shaking his head, “there are too many possibilities of things that can happen…”
“Oh like what, you think I cant take care of myself?” Knuckles asked defensively holding his spiked fist up. Silver rolled his eyes, “I’m not saying that you cant… it’s just, our rivals are lying in waiting for one of us to fall victim. Anything could go wrong, the gun could get taken, and you could get killed.”
Knuckles looked away in disbelief, “I can’t believe that you’re treating me as if I-” he was cut off as he fell to the ground. Sonic looked up anxiously to see none other than a fat, grey albatross standing behind him with a long, metal bar in his hand. He smiled cruelly and glared at Sonic and Silver who returned the cold stare, “who’s next?” he asked in his dim-witted voice.
“You.” Sonic uttered, and hurriedly threw a judo kick into the fat albatross’s thick, fluffy chest, knocking him to the ground and ripping the bar from his hand. “What brings you onto our territory so early in the night, Storm?”
“Hey, don’t get snarky, you little blue runt!” Storm sputtered as Sonic held him down and handed Silver the bar, “I’ll take care of this f*****.” Silver sneered, lifting the bar into the air and slamming down, hard into Storm’s face. The bird was out, as was Knuckles. Silver carefully hoisted Knuckles’ limp body off the ground, “don’t forget Shadow’s delivery.” he said, nodding towards the precious box that contained a brand new M-16. Sonic grabbed it, “hurry, we have to get to the motel, immediately before more of Jet’s gang decides to play.”
Silver kept a straight face as they walked through the silent, nearly-empty, dark, city streets. Only passing the occasional beggar or prostitute. “Hey, sugar? Want some candy tonight? I’m not that expensive…” Silver looked up to see a tall blond girl wearing a short blue dress winking at him, “uh… no, I’m on a mission.”
“Ooh, you’re such a cute little guy.” she squealed. She must’ve been high because the next thing that she said totally didn’t make sense, “I saw you in unicorn planet…”
“And uh, we’d better get going…” Sonic dragged Silver forward and laughed, “she was stoned man!” he cried. “Totally, I wonder if she’s one of our customers?”
“Hmm, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her around before… probably not. Most of our customers are men. She could be one of Shadow’s customers though.” Silver supposed thoughtfully as he and Sonic continued towards Shadow’s motel. “There it is.” Sonic pointed to an old rundown, motel. Soiled, white paint peeled away from the walls, revealing the original brick. Silver stepped to the old wooden door that was splintering and mouldy. Sonic wrinkled his nose, “the place looks abandoned…”
“Well it’s not.” he jumped back as the door creaked open and a black hedgehog’s head popped out, “Mephiles?”
“Ahh, Sonic and Silver and… oh my.” Mephiles gasped as his eyes fell on Knuckles, “come inside. We should have vacancies.” he joked. For he obviously had vacancies since no one even knew about the old motel which was supposed to be abandoned. Sonic’s jaw dropped marvel as he adored the grandeur ceilings, with the original, ancient artwork having been restored. There was a black phoenix and a red firebird with their feathers swirled together, as they looked as if they were painted to be dancing in fire. Then when he set his eyes on the walls he smiled, they were covered in dated murals, done a great while back of Shadow as Sir Lancelot, Blaze as Sir Percival, Knuckles as Sir Gawain, Silver as Sir Galahad, and Sonic himself as King Arthur, all standing bravely, masked with swords in hand, under an apple tree in the middle of an orchard with Rouge posing as Guinevere stretched out in front of all of them, seductively. Underneath the mural was a gold-framed bench that had upholstery, made to match the art in the room, accompanied by two identical chairs and a small, coffee table, all furniture complimented by a cream-colored grand piano that sat in the corner of the lobby. They sat on a large olive-coloured Persian rug which was positioned neatly on the ancient, yet marvellous and lustrous black marble floor. “It looks more like a palace in here than the rundown motel that we saw outside.” Silver breathed, “looks can be deceiving, my dear friend.” Mephiles smiled and led Silver, Sonic and Knuckles up the nicely carpeted stairs which were guarded by a gold handrail. “Revamping this place must’ve cost a fortune…”
“Well, when you make a fortune selling drugs, then you can spend a fortune turning a dump into this.” Mephiles spread his thin arms out to demonstrate as he led the tired threesome into the first room on the right and handed Sonic the key, “here. You guys are welcome to stay as long as you want to. All fellow gangsters are welcome here… except for our rivals.”
“Wait! Where’s Shadow?” Mephiles looked thoughtful for a moment and scratched his head, “honestly, I don’t know.”
“But he’s your leader!”
“I don’t have to know everything that my leader does, do I?”
“No.”
“Hey,” Mephiles said as Silver lay Knuckles down on the bed, “what?” he looked up, “you may want to check out how bad your friend was hit…” Mephiles reached for Knuckles’ head and lifted it up, revealing a large, black bruise that was encrusted with blood, right above where his dreads started. “I’ll go downstairs and get some ice. You three rest up, enjoy whatever you want.” Mephiles smiled and left the room. “Sweeet!” Sonic cried after Mephiles left. “What?” Silver asked. “Look at this place?” It was true, Shadow and his gang had really done a lot for this place. The walls were painted a goldish-olive color and a delicate Victorian-styled border surrounded the room. The furniture was all glossy, varnished, mahogany. The two king-sized beds were cosseted with dark purple canopies that matched the color of the heavy, silk, down-filled, duvets and pillows. In front of the beds was a large TV cabinet which contained a 52” flat-screen LCD TV that was loaded with channels and was hooked up to multiple gaming systems that were kept hidden away by the door at the bottom of the cabinet. “Wow, this is amazing! It’s like they’re trying to do a modern seventeenth century thing here…” Silver gasped and sprawled out on the bed, only to have to get up again as a knock sounded at the door. He opened it, letting Mephiles, who had an ice-pack in his hand; walk straight over to Knuckles and lay it under his head, “Espio just got back and I told him you were here, he doesn’t seem to mind, so have fun and I’ll tell you when Shadow gets back.”
“Thank you so muck Meph, you don’t know how much we appreciate this…” Sonic trailed off, speechless. “That’s what friends are here for right?”
“Right.” Silver smiled and Mephiles winked as he closed the door behind them. Soon enough, Sonic had settled on playing some Call of Duty Black Ops and Silver had settled on a nap, when he was awoken, not by the volume of Sonic’s gaming, but by abrupt, rude speech flowing from the lobby. “Turn that down Sonic!” he hissed as he strained to hear the words that were being spoken. Sonic too became interested and paused his game, coming to sit beside his friend and listen. They looked at each other, puzzled as they caught clips of the conversation. “-no! how could I keep that from him!”
“You’re a backstabbing f*****, that’s what you are!” Silver frowned in shock, hearing such profane language. “I wonder what’s going on?”
“I cant even begin to tell you…”
“I hope Mephiles is okay.” Silver trailed off considerably and his peculiar, dazzling, yellow eyes saddened, “on the other hand, I hope our buddy’s gonna be okay…” Sonic put his hand affectionately on Silver’s shoulder, “If anyone pulls through, it’ll be Knuckles.” he smiled at his leader before taking his hand away and returning to his game. Silver sighed and walked over to the dark wine-colored curtain and moved it aside. Looking out only to see the darkness of the night. When his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he grimaced. Standing outside where Mephiles and Shadow and they were talking somewhat calmly, but Shadow had an unbelieving face to him and Mephiles a pleading one. Silver wondered what they were talking about as he closed the curtain and moseyed back onto the bed; pulling back the luxurious, deep violet, silk covers and slipping under, laying his head on the soft pillow and allowing himself to fall into a study slumber. Sonic stopped his gaming and turned around to see his leader fast asleep. He was troubled by Knuckles’ incident and many other incidents that clouded around him; past and present. He shut the TV off and leapt off the bed. Coming around the other side and slipping in on the far side of Silver only to feel the sleep come himself.
